Scene 1- We start off with a scene
with me and Lucienne (as current students)
sitting on one side, Lauren (as the Principle) standing in the middle
and Margaret (as a previous student) on the other side. This scene stayed
constant throughout our development of this piece.
Scene 2- This next scene is still
part of the ad and we introduce what our piece is about. Margaret starts off by
saying that we have been studying girl’s education recently. Then we state some
facts about Malala Yousafzai. Originally, this scene was a bit different. We were
in a classroom and we were questioning as to why we were learning about girls
education.
Scene 3- In this scene, we are all
standing in a straight line. Lucienne is holding up a placard that says ‘America’.
She says “when I finish school I want to be the first female president of America”.
Lauren holds up a placard that says, ‘Australia’. She says “when I finish
school, I want to be a lawyer”. I hold up a placard that says ‘Sudan’ and I say,
“When I finish school, I want to be safe.” Margaret holds up a sign that says ‘Pakistan’
and she says “I want to be alive to finish school”. We pass a book along after
we say our line. This scene was added recently.
Scene 4- This is a scene which
shows the typical characteristics of a Taliban household. Lucienne and I play
Taliban Warlords and Margaret plays a woman in a Taliban household. Lucienne states
some facts while I act upon those facts. Because Margaret ends up with the book
in the last scene, she holds the book and after Lucienne’s first fact, I take
the book away from Margaret. Then after Lucienne finishes he dialogue both of
us drag Margaret back and she screams “I am entitled to an education!” This scene
was added in very recently.
Scene 5- This scene is a bit
unique. I play a Taliban woman and someone is taking my interview. I speak in
Hindi. I sit on centre stage and I start off with the book. Lucienne takes the
book away from me and covers my eyes with the book.
Scene 6 – In this scene, I play
Malala Yousafzai. We reenact her shooting. We use the song ‘Shot me down’. Originally,
we were going to use ‘Titanium’ but later we thought that Shot Me Down was a
much more appropriate song. After I fall, there is a powerpoint showing the
effects of her shooting. Then we play the ‘I am stronger than fear’ video.
Scene 7- this scene is a class
room scene where we introduce the Nigerian school girls who have been
kidnapped. This scene was added recently.
Scene 8- In this scene, I play the
role of Malala Yousafzai. I give a speech that really captures her character
and her determination. This scene shows how she is now renowned for speaking up
for girls to have the right to an education.
Scene 9- In this scene we show how
the media lost their interest in the Nigerian school girls matter. Lauren and I
are playing protesters while Lucienne and Margaret are playing the roles of the
media. This scene was included recently.
Scene 10- in this scene we show how
much the girls from Windenham care about this matter. This scene was developed
throughout the term depending on our content.
Scene 11- this is the last scene
of our piece. It starts off with a video that we made. Then we go back into our
line formation and hold up placards that say “#Bring Back Our Girls”. We then
end the piece by saying, “The worst thing for extremists is a girl with a book”.
We also pass the book along the line in this scene. This scene was also
changed. We were going to say ‘change only takes a moment of hope, what will
you change?’ We then changed it to “look what one girl can change. What will
you change?” We then decided on our current line. We also thought that we will say this all at
once but then we realized that it was too hard to get the timing right so we
say 3 words each.
